I enjoy the subtle references in my designs but I'm wondering if they may be too oblique. It seems obvious to me that this is a Johnny Cash shirt. The silhouette is unmistakable to me as is the reference to one of his most popular songs "Ring of Fire." The fact that it is in memorium and is referencing his death is communicated in his silhouette walking away and the somber nature of the image. Of course, he is also known as  "The Man in Black"  Am I putting too much into these shirts or am I just hoping to appeal to an audience/market that cares about what they wear and see it as an expression of their personality, beliefs and loves? Should I produce items that have a mass apeal or take pleasure in knowing that those who buy these and wear them are in on the message, a message that is not always clear to everyone who see it. I have always loved the secret connection, the code, the subtle nod or wink that connects an underground society, or a consciously and purposeful marginalised group.
